Every person, regardless of their gender or sexual preference, are entitled of equal rights. As stated in the section 1 of article 3 of the 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines, “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, nor shall any person be denied the equal protection of the laws”. However, this is not the case for our brothers and sisters in the LGBT community specifically if we are to talk about the issue of same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage, as generally defined, is the marriage between partners of the same sex that is a man to a man and a woman to a woman. A marriage requires to be recognized by the law and this becomes problematic because in the Philippine context LGBT couple is being alienated with the concept of marriage equality for their political and civil status are not being treated equally of those of the heterosexual couples. Up until now there is no law that allows for the same-sex partners to be legally recognized by the state and law as a couple if they opt for marriage. This is important because married couples that are recognized by the law enjoy civil rights that same-sex couples do not for example if one of the heterosexual couple dies the other one gets to claim whatever belongings his or her deceased partner has left, for same-sex partners it is the family of the deceased one who gets to claim of the belonging even if the property is being treated as conjugally owned. This is just one of the many civil rights that same-sex married people are being deprived of. Many times, in the past, that some of our legislators tried to enact a bill that would promote for such right for same-sex couples but is being impede by their conservative constituents. An example of which is the SOGIE (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity or Expression) Equality bill. The bill already passed the lower house but is being hotly debated in the senate, three senators namely, Senator Tito Sotto, Senator Manny Pacquiao, and Senator Joel Villanueva had staunchly opposed the bill because of their religious belief. This only goes to show that people still consider a lot of things in view of this issue of same-sex marriage, that is why the researchers conducted a social experiment to know the perceptions of people in same-sex marriage and the factors that affect these perspectives. The researchers specifically focused on lesbian same-sex marriage for we believe that among the same-sex marriage it is the marriage between a woman and a woman that is not being discussed a lot.
